In December 2016, Tetra Financial supported a local elementary school for their annual Holiday Service Project. Lincoln Elementary, located on 430 East 3700 South in Salt Lake City, has a 93% immigrant/refugee population, with nearly all of the students speaking English as a second language. Many of the families living in the Lincoln Elementary boundaries are low income or just beginning a new life in a new country.
Students have the opportunity to earn “bucks” through good attendance, turning in homework, reading, and general positive behavior. They can then use these bucks to purchase items at the school Loot Store. The most popular items are food, hygiene supplies and toys. Since implementing the program, teachers have reported they have seen a rise in both morale and motivation in their students.
The Loot Store program at Lincoln Elementary is managed by local volunteers, and the inventory comes entirely from community donations, which is where Tetra Financial saw an opportunity to get involved. Promoting this as their annual Holiday Service Project, Tetra employees donated clothes, food and toys which was matched by a cash donation from Tetra Financial. These donations helped stock the Loot Store for the remainder of the 2016 – 2017 school year.
